Hypersensitive-like response in Brassica plants is specifically induced by molecules from egg-associated secretions of cabbage white butterflies

چکیده

Plants perceive and respond to herbivore insect eggs. Upon egg deposition on leaves, a strong hypersensitive response (HR)-like cell death can be activated leading desiccation and/or dropping. In Brassica spp., including many crops, the HR-like mechanism against eggs of cabbage white butterflies ( Pieris spp.) is poorly understood. Using two species, crop B. rapa its wild relative nigra , we studied cellular molecular plant brassicae characterized potential egg-associated patterns (EAMPs) inducing death. We found that P. induced typical hallmarks early immune responses, such as callose deposition, production reactive oxygen species in leaf tissue, also plants did not express However, elevated levels ethylene upregulation salicylic acid-responsive genes were only detected accession expressing Eggs wash from contains compounds but generalist moth Mamestra not. Furthermore, made hatched eggs, glue, accessory reproductive glands (ARG) produce this death, whereas washes unfertilized dissected ovaries or removal glue resulted no reduced response. This suggests there one multiple associated pattern (EAMP) located teresponse specific species. Lastly, our results indicate EAMP neither lipidic nor proteinaceous. Our study expands knowledge - -egg interaction step closer toward identification EAMPs corresponding receptor(s) Brassica.

Role of Large Cabbage White butterfly male-derived compounds in elicitation of direct and indirect egg-killing defenses in the black mustard

To successfully exert defenses against herbivores and pathogens plants need to recognize reliable cues produced by their attackers. Up to now, few elicitors associated with herbivorous insects have been identified. We have previously shown that accessory reproductive gland secretions associated with eggs of Cabbage White butterflies (Pieris spp.) induce chemical changes in Brussels sprouts plan...

Male-derived butterfly anti-aphrodisiac mediates induced indirect plant defense.

Plants can recruit parasitic wasps in response to egg deposition by herbivorous insects-a sophisticated indirect plant defense mechanism. Oviposition by the Large Cabbage White butterfly Pieris brassicae on Brussels sprout plants induces phytochemical changes that arrest the egg parasitoid Trichogramma brassicae. Here, we report the identification of an elicitor of such an oviposition-induced p...

Synergistic effects of direct and indirect defences on herbivore egg survival in a wild crucifer.

Evolutionary theory of plant defences against herbivores predicts a trade-off between direct (anti-herbivore traits) and indirect defences (attraction of carnivores) when carnivore fitness is reduced. Such a trade-off is expected in plant species that kill herbivore eggs by exhibiting a hypersensitive response (HR)-like necrosis, which should then negatively affect carnivores. We used the black...

Chromosome Doubling of Microspore-Derived Plants from Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) and Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica L.)

Chromosome doubling of microspore-derived plants is an important factor in the practical application of microspore culture technology because breeding programs require a large number of genetically stable, homozygous doubled haploid plants with a high level of fertility. In the present paper, 29 populations of microspore-derived plantlets from cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) and brocc...

Chlorophyll fluorescence imaging of cadmium-treated white cabbage plants

The chlorophyll fluorescence imaging technique is a valuable tool to study the impact of heavy metal stress in plants. The aim of this paper was to investigate the influence of Cd on photosynthetic apparatus of white cabbage (Brassica oleracea subsp. capitata f. alba) plants. Two cabbage cultivars ‘Ditmarska Najwcześniejsza’ (‘DN’; early) and ‘Amager Polana’ (‘AP’; late) were used. Cd was appli...
